Closed combustion stoves require dense, dry hardwood — typically under 20 % moisture and ideally under 15 %. The controlled air supply inside a slow combustion unit means that wet or low-density wood produces excessive smoke, tar build-up in the flue, and inefficient heat output. Dense hardwoods like Kameeldoring and Mopane burn slowly and efficiently, releasing heat steadily over many hours rather than flaring and dying quickly.

Loading tip for slow combustion: Fill the firebox to at least two-thirds capacity with dense hardwood before closing the door. A smaller load in a large firebox burns inefficiently.
