What are Wax Firestarters?

Wax Firestarters are large, weatherproof wax discs that burn longer and hotter than standard firelighter cubes. Where a small wax cube burns for a few minutes, a Wax Firestarter burns for long enough to establish heat in dense hardwoods that take 20–30 minutes to fully catch — species like Kameeldoring, Mopane, and Sekelbos, which are too dense to ignite from a brief flame.

Weatherproof wax means Wax Firestarters can be stored outside, used in windy conditions, and still light reliably from a single match even after exposure to moisture. For Cape Town's wet winters and blustery south-easters, this durability matters.

Why dense hardwood needs a longer-burning starter

Kameeldoring (density 1 100 kg/m³) and Mopane (1 150 kg/m³) are the densest hardwoods in the WoodDrop catalogue. Their density is precisely why they burn for 4–6 hours — but it also means they require sustained heat before they catch. A small firelighter cube that burns for two or three minutes provides enough heat for Blue Gum or Black Wattle, but not enough for Kameeldoring or Mopane, which need heat maintained for 20 minutes or more before the log reaches ignition temperature throughout.

Wax Firestarters solve this by providing a longer sustained burn at the base of the fire stack. Place one disc under a layer of kindling and the main wood — the disc burns through the ignition phase, the kindling catches and sustains the heat, and the main log begins to carbonise and then ignite. The result is a reliable fire start even with the densest hardwood.

How to use Wax Firestarters with dense hardwood

Place one Wax Firestarter disc at the base of the fire stack, directly under a layer of Braai Kindling. Arrange four to six pieces of kindling in a tent or cross-hatch above the disc. Place two to three pieces of the main hardwood on top. Light the disc with a single match.

Allow 20–30 minutes from lighting before starting to cook or expecting a full-heat fire. Dense hardwoods like Kameeldoring do not rush — the waiting time is part of the process. Resist the temptation to add more wood or firelighters if the fire appears slow: the disc will burn through the ignition phase, and the Kameeldoring will be producing heat long after any lighter wood would have burned out.

For lighter woods like Blue Gum and Black Wattle, a Wax Firestarter works equally well but a standard Eco Firelighter cube is sufficient and more economical. Save the Wax Firestarters for premium hardwood orders.

Cape Town winters combine rain, wind, and humidity in ways that make fire-starting unreliable if the starter is not moisture-resistant. Standard firelighter cubes can absorb enough ambient humidity over a Cape winter to become difficult to light — a frustrating problem when the evening is already cold and the family is waiting.

• Mopane (R139/Drop, 1 150 kg/m³) — The densest wood in the catalogue; a Wax Firestarter and kindling together are the recommended approach.
• Sekelbos (R110/Drop, 970 kg/m³) — Catches faster than Kameeldoring but benefits from a Wax Firestarter for reliable cold-start ignition.

For lighter-density woods — Blue Gum, Black Wattle, Rooikrans, and Vine — the standard Eco Firelighters at R29 are sufficient and more economical.
